About FTTN

Fibre to the Node: how it works and what you need to get connected.

How it connects

Fibre runs to a node cabinet nearby. Your copper phone line connects the node to the phone socket in your home.

What you need

A VDSL2 modem-router plugged into your phone socket. Set its internet connection to Dynamic IP (DHCP). There is no PPPoE login and no VLAN tag.

Speed

Your speed depends on how far you are from the node and the condition of the copper. Homes close to the node get the best speeds.

Power

NBN® services don't work in a power outage, and you can't make calls over them, including to Triple Zero (000).

Your line speed

Your line may not reach a plan's top speed. After connection we check your line's maximum attainable speed. If it can't support your plan, you can move to a lower plan with a pro-rata credit, or cancel with no exit fee. NBN Co is upgrading many copper lines to full fibre. If your address moves to FTTP, you can change to the faster fibre plans with no exit fee.

FTTN questions

Why does my modem need to be VDSL2?

FTTN carries your internet over the copper phone line using VDSL2. A router without a VDSL2 modem built in can't connect to it.

How do I know if I have FTTN?

Check your address at the top of this page. We'll show your connection type, and if it isn't FTTN, we'll take you to the right plans.

Is there a contract?

No. Every plan is prepaid and month to month, with no lock-in contract and no exit fees.

Can I change plans later?

Yes, any time. Your old plan is credited and the new plan is charged pro-rata. Upgrades need enough balance to cover the difference.

Not sure what you've got?

Check your address and we'll show your NBN® connection type and every plan you can get there.
