About HFC

Hybrid Fibre Coaxial: how it works and what you need to get connected.

How it connects

Fibre runs to your area, then a coaxial cable runs to a wall outlet in your home. The outlet connects to an NBN® HFC box.

What you need

An NBN®-compatible router. Plug its WAN port into the UNI-D port on the NBN® HFC box and set the WAN to Dynamic IP (DHCP). There is no PPPoE login and no VLAN tag. For 500 Mbps and above you need a gigabit WAN port, and for speeds above 1 Gbps a 2.5 Gbps WAN port.

Speed

HFC supports very high download speeds. Upload speeds are lower than on FTTP, so the plans with the fastest uploads are FTTP only.

Power

NBN® services don't work in a power outage, and you can't make calls over them, including to Triple Zero (000).

HFC questions

Why can't I get the high-upload plans on HFC?

NBN® doesn't sell those upload speeds on HFC. The plans listed on this page are the ones you can order on an HFC connection.

How do I know if I have HFC?

Check your address at the top of this page. We'll show your connection type, and if it isn't HFC, we'll take you to the right plans.

Is there a contract?

No. Every plan is prepaid and month to month, with no lock-in contract and no exit fees.

Can I change plans later?

Yes, any time. Your old plan is credited and the new plan is charged pro-rata. Upgrades need enough balance to cover the difference.

Not sure what you've got?

Check your address and we'll show your NBN® connection type and every plan you can get there.
