Use this guide when an FTTC service has no internet access. The NBN Connection Device (NCD) is a separate box between the telephone wall socket and your router. FTTC's NCD is not the same as an FTTP NTD or an FTTN/B VDSL modem. Use the current nbn guide for the NCD model before interpreting indicator states.
1. Check for outages
Check for a relevant outage notice. If one matches your area/service, follow its update.
Otherwise continue.
2. Record the NCD model and indicators
Identify the NCD and record the model and labelled indicators. Note Power, Connection, DSL and LAN states if those labels are present.
Do not assume a particular colour or flashing state has the same meaning on every model.
3. Check accessible leads
Check accessible leads. Confirm the telephone lead between wall socket and NCD and the Ethernet handoff between NCD and router are seated and visibly undamaged.
Do not open the NCD, disturb building wiring or move the NBN-side cable between ports.
4. Compare devices and connection types
Compare a second device and a wired connection to the router. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not, use Wi-Fi versus wired speed.
If only one device fails, use Wi-Fi connected but no internet for client-specific checks. If all devices fail, continue.
5. Restart using normal power controls
Restart only through normal power controls and applicable equipment instructions. Do not press a reset pinhole or factory-reset your router.
Test once after the equipment's normal start-up.
6. Record your results
Record the outage check, NCD model and indicator observations, cable checks, devices tested and wired/Wi-Fi result. For current equipment information, start with nbn's network technology guides and select information matching your NCD.
