NBN slow speeds on FTTN and FTTB: compare controlled Ethernet and Wi-Fi speed tests, devices and cables, and record VDSL modem DSL observations.

Use this guide if an FTTN or FTTB service connects but is slower than expected. Both use a VDSL modem connected to a telephone wall socket; there is no separate customer NBN connection box at the premises. First compare a controlled speed test with Wi-Fi and device limitations.

1. Check for outages

Check for a relevant outage notice and note any planned work. If a notice applies, follow its update.

Otherwise continue.

2. Run a controlled Ethernet speed test

Test one device by Ethernet if possible. Pause streaming, downloads and other heavy use on that device and household devices.

Repeat the same reputable speed test and record the time and result. Do not use a test site or server selected by an unrelated provider.

3. Compare Wi-Fi near the router

Compare with Wi-Fi near the router. If wired is better, the access connection may not be the limiting link; see Wi-Fi versus wired speed.

If wired and Wi-Fi are similarly slow, continue.

4. Compare devices and Ethernet leads

Compare another device and another known-good Ethernet lead. Change one thing at a time.

If only one device or cable changes the result, record that difference; if several devices are slow by Ethernet, note that the issue is not limited to Wi-Fi.

5. Observe DSL synchronisation

Observe DSL synchronisation on the VDSL modem. Record the label and whether its state changes during a slow period.

Use the manufacturer's current guide for the exact meaning; do not infer a fault from colour or flashing alone.

6. Record your results

Record repeated test results, time, device, wired/Wi-Fi, competing activity, VPN use and DSL observations. If the results vary mainly with Wi-Fi distance or household activity, troubleshoot those conditions.

Use the AI Chat (Ringo) for assistance if multiple wired tests remain slow, and share the evidence.

Do not alter DSL/router configuration, force adapter speed settings or factory-reset equipment as a speed test.
